Creative Flow

Why Creatively-U?

I’ve had a lot of questions lately. Especially “What are you doing now?”

And it’s a little hard to explain.

I try. “Well, I’m doing a lot of my mixed media collage art and I make surface patterns on the computer for fabric, tote bags, and all kinds of things.”

And I get a sort of look that has an “is that all” ring to it.

So, I continue. “I also teach an online course on creativity for women who are trying to regain a creative passion or change their life to be more enjoyable. They feel kinda stuck and need to unstuck.”

Confusion now. “Huh? So, you teach art?”

“No. Let me start over.”

“I teach creative thinking skills to help midlife women identify their natural gifts and reconnect to their passion.” “I help them reignite that spark within and keep it lit, ya know, so they can have a bit of direction, regain a sense of self, and increase life satisfaction in the second half.”

Confusion has turned to slightly puzzled… “Why?”

Oh boy…..

“Because it’s important!”

I know because I was once without it and I was miserable! But I found my way back and I know how vital it is to my sanity. There’s proof.

I am so grateful to be able to design the majority of my time working at things I love and doing things that make me healthier and happier every day.

Creativity is a natural part of life as a human being. It’s not limited to artistic stuff. Living from your creative spirit means you react to every moment from a space of possibility and openness.

Creativity can solve almost any problem. The creative act, the defeat of habit by originality, overcomes everything. George Lois

According to Deepak Chopra, “Creativity is one of your greatest allies if you want a fulfilled life.” He states that you are BEING creative when you bring hidden potential to life, regardless of the expression. The highest use of creativity is a “creative” life which brings originality and rejuvenation every day. I happen to do it through artistic expression, but I also do it through teaching, mentoring and playing with Cosmo!

3 important reasons to be more creative …

  1. Not only can being creative help you live longer, but it can improve your health and quality of life. And there’s proof. James Clear refers to research that shows creating art reduces stress and anxiety, decreases negative emotions, and improves healing. In this Scientific American article, “researchers found that only creativity—not intelligence or overall openness—decreased mortality risk.” Well, that’s good enough for me.
  • Being creative helps you become a better problem solver too. Instead of coming from a solely logical side, your creative edge can approach a situation from all angles. Creativity helps you see things differently and deal with uncertainty. Studies show that creative people are better at living with uncertainty because they can adapt their thinking to allow for the unknown. Who couldn’t use a little more of that now-a-days!
  • Being creative comes with a risk of failure, and a lot of emotional ups and downs. You’ll need to be vulnerable to share your art. Engaging in the creative process is a great confidence builder because you discover that failure is part of the process…and survivable. It helps us grow and that makes our work better. We can let go of the fear and try new things even at the risk of failing.

The creative process encourages everyone to be creative. Art isn’t just for “creative-types” and even if you don’t think you are artistically inclined, you’ll be surprised at your ability to create great work. If you haven’t created anything lately, keep it simple and fun. Write a poem, plant an herb garden, or dance like no one’s watching without judgement.

Creativity engages the mind and unblocks old patterns or habits of thinking.

It can help draw out what’s already in there – hidden talents and inner abilities can emerge. It connects us with our passions.

Creativity nurtures confidence and instills curiosity.

Creativity is fun, joyful, and surprising.

Creativity keeps the mind open and active.

Creativity supports resilience.

“So that’s why I do it.”

Ahh, now the lightbulb is going off. “So, can you teach me that stuff?”

I sure can..
