To the New Year…

…..new beginnings, and a new life

This is the time of year that we all think about a New Year’s resolution. We make a list of all the things we want to do differently over the next year. Then we try to choose one. Maybe we decide to eat better, drink less, exercise more, or spend more time with family. Maybe we plan on finding a new job or finally finishing that long-forgotten project..

Regardless, this is the time of year that we choose a new pattern of behavior and put forth our best efforts to accomplish our resolution… until about February!

I would like to suggest an alternate approach.

Well, next week IS February! 😊 I would like to suggest a resolution that is more abstract in nature but more personal in approach. I would like to suggest that, instead of a behavior that requires a change in thinking, why not decide to change your thinking first? Why not put your personal growth, your thinking habits, first?

10 weeks…

For the next ten weeks, I propose using one of 10 concepts that helped me shape a surprisingly good 2020. These concepts are not entirely new. You have probably heard some of them before. But sometimes that is what we need. Sometimes we need to hear something several times before it really resonates with us.

Explore these principles, expanding on what each means to you. Then, put one into practice for a week and see what can be gained from implementing it. There is a lot of sage advice out there, but it can be intimidating if you don’t know what to look for or how to use it.

“New beginnings are often disguised as painful endings. Lao Tzu

Make this a play exercise. There is nothing to memorize. A quick mental inventory revealed that my life was not in line with my values. These 10 principles helped me shift perspective and build a truly rewarding life. They might just do the same for you!

Make it past February……

Whatever your bliss is, be it gardening, cooking, painting, reading to children….you have inside you a purpose, a passion, a vision. Make 2021 be the year that you let it shine.

So, what IS she talking about, you ask?? Below I have included a link to a workbook that outlines 10 of these principles. You’ll find exercises around ideas like your sense of what success means, or what your struggles are trying to tell you, or why you shouldn’t be the smartest person in the room. Feel free to grab your copy and start thinking! There are so many more that I could suggest, but we’ll leave that for another time!

New year-a new chapter, new verse, or just the same old story? Ultimately, we write it. The choice is ours. Alex Morritt
