When the World Feels Heavy, Create

Finding Calm Through Creativity

These days, it’s easy to feel weighed down by all the craziness happening around us. With the looming election, economic uncertainties, and constant stream of news headlines, it seems like stress and fear have become daily companions. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, uncertain, or simply numb—you’re not alone. It’s perfectly normal to feel this way, and you’re not the only one seeking a break from it all.

When everything feels heavy, I want to suggest something simple: create. It might not solve the world’s problems, but it can help ease some of the weight we carry inside.

The Nature of Fear and Apathy

The truth is, uncertainty makes us feel powerless, and that can lead to fear, decision fatigue, or even withdrawal. You may be experiencing moments where you just want to “shut it all out” or even hide from making any more choices, whether big or small. This is a natural response. Our brains are designed to protect us, and sometimes that means retreating when the outside world feels too overwhelming.

But there’s another side to this: our minds also crave expression and release. While we can’t control everything happening around us, we can control how we respond to it. And creativity, in all its forms, is one of the most effective ways to channel our feelings into something meaningful, even if it’s just for ourselves.

The Healing Power of Creativity

Why is creativity such a powerful tool? Because it allows us to step away from the relentless noise of the world and enter a space where we can just be. Whether it’s doodling on scrap paper, cutting fabric swatches, or even rearranging your workspace, creativity shifts your focus from fear to action—no matter how small that action might be.

When we create, we activate parts of the brain associated with relaxation and joy, offering us a break from worry and anxiety. Just 10 or 15 minutes spent sketching, sewing, or journaling can lower stress levels and bring a sense of calm. The beauty of creativity lies in its simplicity: you don’t need to have a plan, a deadline, or even a goal. You just need a few moments to immerse yourself in the process.

Easy Ways to Get Started

If the idea of starting something feels daunting, consider this: you don’t have to tackle a big project. In fact, you don’t even have to finish anything! Here are a few simple, no-pressure ways to dip your toes back into the creative pool:

  • Doodle Freely: Grab a piece of paper and doodle whatever comes to mind. Let your pen move without judgment—no one is grading your art here.
  • Fabric Fun: Go through your fabric stash. Feel the textures, play with color combinations, or even cut a few swatches for fun. Just being around the materials can spark ideas and ease tension.
  • Create a Vision Board: Flip through old magazines or browse online for images that inspire you. Print or cut them out and paste them onto a piece of paper or board. It’s a simple way to re-engage with what lights you up.
  • Journal Your Thoughts: Writing about how you’re feeling can be incredibly freeing. Whether it’s a few words, a full page, or a list of creative ideas, the act of writing helps to untangle thoughts.
  • Stick Sketching: If you’re up for it, take a walk outside and sketch what catches your eye. It could be a tree branch, a cluster of leaves, or a quirky building in the distance. Use the “stick figure” style so it won’t be perfect! It doesn’t matter! What matters is the act of capturing what you see.

The goal here isn’t to create a masterpiece; it’s to create a moment of peace.

The Importance of Community

Even when we feel like retreating, connecting with others can help lift some of the heaviness. Sometimes, sharing a project or talking about what we’re making—even if it’s not finished—can offer a sense of relief. It’s a reminder that we’re all navigating this together.

Whether it’s an online group, a creative buddy, or just a comment on a blog post, reach out when you’re ready. You might find that others are experiencing the same feelings and looking for ways to stay grounded.

I’d love for you to share what you’re working on, even if it’s just a doodle or a half-stitched seam. The act of sharing can be as healing as the act of creating.

Here’s My Gentle Call to Create

If you’re feeling the weight of the world right now, I encourage you to take a small step. It doesn’t have to be big or perfect—just a few moments dedicated to creating something. You might find that, in these small actions, a sense of calm starts to take root.

So, go ahead: pick up that pencil, sort that fabric stash, or cut out some magazine clippings. Let creativity be your refuge, even if only for a little while.

Stay creative, and know that you’re not alone.
